Reporting on School Report

On the 16th March Neale-Wade had a whole day to write stories and produce videos for the BBC school report day. 34 students were selected for what was a fun day and all of them said they enjoyed it.

We started the day with a visit from a roving reporter from BBC radio Cambridgeshire. John Devine came in to talk to some of our of press club members about what we hoped to do today and then we recorded an interview on his iPhone which will be played throughout the day as part of the news.

The 34 selected student met up in the lecture theatre, and Miss Wilshire explained what the day was about and showed us an example video of the sort of thing she hoped we would produce by the end of the day the day. Then the students got themselves into teams and ready to start making the news. For Schools Report Day the student split up into four groups of six, each group covered a different area of news, we had a local team, national team, a weather team and a sports team.

The local team were off to a flying start with an interview in the first 30 minutes. They went down to Mrs Parks who was with the apprenticeship bus. That went so successfully they were soon on to their second story of the day. Athena and Ariya went to drama to interview Harrison who is playing the main part in the school production of Dracula Spectacular.

The national team interviewed a 6th former called Morgan, and George asked him the question “What do you think of Brexit?” Morgan had a negative opinion on this matter and believed it was “a bad idea”.

The sport team went to interview players of the Neale-Wade Football Team about their recent win between Neale-Wade and Thomas Clarkson, in which Neale-Wade won 7-5.

The weather team researched today and tomorrows weather, they used the projector and they downloaded weather maps for both days and created a ‘news room’ link to another part of the studio for Archie to present the weather.

All of the news articles and videos needed to be upload by 2:30 pm but students then had a delay after some technical issues. Everyone pulled together to work as a team to fix the problems and pulled together to produce their final pieces. Katie said ‘Working in a news room is so stressful, it’s really hard getting everything together in time for the deadline when equipment isn’t working properly but it has been good fun’.
